{"id":144,"date":"2019-07-26T22:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-27T02:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themes.estudiopatagon.com\/wordpress\/maktub\/?p=144"},"modified":"2019-07-26T22:00:28","modified_gmt":"2019-07-27T02:00:28","slug":"the-meaning-of-health-has-evolved-over-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/the-meaning-of-health-has-evolved-over-time\/","title":{"rendered":"The meaning of health has evolved over time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In keeping with the biomedical perspective, early definitions of health focused on the theme of the body&#8217;s ability to function; health was seen as a state of normal function that could be disrupted from time to time by disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of such a definition of health is: &#8220;a state characterized by anatomic, physiologic, and <a href=\"#\">psychological integrity<\/a>; ability to perform personally valued family, work, and community roles; ability to deal with physical, biological, psychological, and social stress&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then in 1948, in a radical departure from previous definitions, the World <strong>Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> proposed a definition that aimed higher: linking health to well-being, in terms of &#8220;physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/themes.estudiopatagon.com\/wordpress\/maktub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-wearing-a-bright-headscarf-and-carrying-flowers-89-desktop-wallpaper-1024x576.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-658\" width=\"256\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-wearing-a-bright-headscarf-and-carrying-flowers-89-desktop-wallpaper-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-wearing-a-bright-headscarf-and-carrying-flowers-89-desktop-wallpaper-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-wearing-a-bright-headscarf-and-carrying-flowers-89-desktop-wallpaper-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-wearing-a-bright-headscarf-and-carrying-flowers-89-desktop-wallpaper-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-wearing-a-bright-headscarf-and-carrying-flowers-89-desktop-wallpaper.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although this definition was welcomed by some as being innovative, it was also criticized as being vague, <a href=\"#\">excessively broad<\/a> and was not construed as measurable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a long time, it was set aside as an impractical ideal and most discussions of health returned to the <strong>practicality <\/strong>of the biomedical model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as there was a shift from viewing disease as a state to thinking of it as a process, the same shift happened in definitions of health. Again, the WHO played a leading role when it fostered the development of the <strong>health promotion movement in the 1980s<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/themes.estudiopatagon.com\/wordpress\/maktub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-holding-a-guidebook-or-map-90-desktop-wallpaper-1024x576.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-holding-a-guidebook-or-map-90-desktop-wallpaper-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-holding-a-guidebook-or-map-90-desktop-wallpaper-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-holding-a-guidebook-or-map-90-desktop-wallpaper-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-holding-a-guidebook-or-map-90-desktop-wallpaper-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/politicalengineer.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/mixkit-woman-holding-a-guidebook-or-map-90-desktop-wallpaper.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This brought in a new conception of health, not as a state, but in dynamic terms of resiliency, in other words, as &#8220;a resource for living&#8221;. 1984 WHO revised the definition of health defined it as &#8220;the extent to which an individual or group is able to realize aspirations and satisfy needs and to change or cope with the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health is a <strong>resource for everyday<\/strong> life, not the objective of living; it is a positive concept, emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In keeping with the biomedical perspective, early definitions of health focused on the theme of the body&#8217;s ability to function; health was seen as a&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":638,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[140,143],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-144","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","category-travel"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
