Twitter rules are to ensure all people can participate in public conversation freely. In this article, I’ll explain how are regulations applied on Twitter
Twitter may take enforcement action against a specific piece of material (e.g., a Single Tweet or Direct Message) or against the entire account. It could use a mix of these choices. In certain cases, this is due to the behaviour violating Twitter Rules. It might also be in response to a lawful and appropriately scoped request from an authorized entity in a specific country. Some of the possible enforcement actions are listed below.
Tweet – Level Enforcement
To avoid being overly harsh with an otherwise good account that made a mistake and violated its rules, Twitter takes action at the Tweet level. At the Tweet level, they might do several things, like:
Identifying a Tweet that may include disputed or false information. Their current misleading policies cover the following subjects:
COVID-19, civic integrity and manipulated media. If Twitter determines that a Tweet contains disputed or misleading information that could affect users in accordance with their rules, they may add a label to the tweet to provide additional explanation.
Limiting Tweet Visibility
This reduces the visibility of content on Twitter by making Tweets ineligible for amplification in Top search results and timelines for users who do not follow the Tweet author, downranking Tweets in replies (except when the user follows the Tweet author), and/or excluding Tweets and/or accounts from email or in-product recommendations. Limiting Tweet Visibility is determined by a variety of indications regarding the nature of the engagement and the sort of information.
Tweets that must be Removed
When the Twitter staff determines that a Tweet violated the Twitter Rules, they order the offender to delete it. The offending Tweet before they are allowed to tweet again. They send an email to the offender notifying them of the offending Tweet(s) and the policies that were violated. They must next go through the process of removing the infringing Tweet or if they believe the Twitter staff made a mistake, appeal our evaluation.
Hiding a violating Tweet while it is being Removed
In the interim between when Twitter takes enforcement action and when the person removes the Tweet, Twitter will hide that Tweet from public view and replace the original content with a notice stating that the Tweet is no longer available because it violated our Rules. This warning will also be displayed for 14 days after the Tweet is deleted.
Where to find this notice
●The details page of the infringing Tweet on Twitter for iOS and Android, as well as twitter.com.
●The profile page of the infringing account on Twitter for iOS and Android, as well as twitter.com.
❖In the absence of this notice one can find in areas other than the profiles and Tweet details sections of any Twitter client, such as the Home timeline, alerts, and search.
Notice of Public Interest Exception
In certain cases, Twitter may decide that it is in the public interest to allow a Tweet that would otherwise be against their terms of service to be posted on their platform. In the event that Twitter makes such an exception, the Tweet will be hidden behind a message that explains the circumstance and provides users with the option to read the Tweet if they so desire.
When Twitter applies the notification, they will also do the following actions to make the Tweet less visible on their Platform
●They will disable interactions such as replies, re-tweets, and favourites. You may still Quote Tweet if you want to discuss it.
●They will not display any engagement numbers on the Tweet (for example, the number of likes or replies), but any previous interactions can be undone (e.g: unliked, re-tweets undone).
●Previous responses will not be seen in the Tweet details.
Furthermore, in order to limit potential harm, Tweets put behind the warning will be unavailable in the following Twitter areas:
●Tweets from the “Top Tweets” list the Home timetable
●Search safely
●Push recommendations and the Notifications tab
●Email and text message suggestions
●Timeline of the live event

Message-Level Direct Enforcement
- Stopping talks between a reported violation and the reporter’s account: The violator’s ability to message the person who reported them will be blocked by Twitter staff once a participant reports the other person in a Private Direct Message session. The reporter’s inbox will also be cleared of the exchange. If the reporter sends more Direct Messages to the violator, the conversation will restart.
- Putting a Direct Message Behind a Notice: In a group Direct Message conversation, the offending Direct Message may be hidden behind a notice so that no one else in the group sees it.
Account – Level Enforcement
If Twitter finds that a person has broken the Twitter Rules in a particularly severe manner or has repeatedly violated them despite receiving notices from us, Twitter will take action at the account level.
- Requiring media or Profile edits: Twitter may temporarily block access to an account whose Profile or Media content doesn’t meet their standards and order the offender to change the offending content to comply. Additionally, they list the regulations that their media content or profile violated.
- Placing an account in read-only Mode: If it appears that an otherwise healthy account is in the midst of an abusive episode, Twitter may temporarily make their account read-only, restricting their ability to Tweet, Retweet or Like material until cooler heads prevail. The individual can view their timelines but can only send Direct Messages to their followers.
- Verifying account Ownership: Twitter may require the account holder for a phone number or email address in order to stop offenders from exploiting the anonymity the site offers and harassing other users. This helps us identify offenders who run several accounts for abusive purposes so that we can take action against those accounts. An account is removed from follower counts, Retweets and likes while it is locked pending the completion of a challenge (such as the requirement to furnish a phone number).
- Permanent suspension-The harshest disciplinary measure available on Twitter is permanent suspension. A permanently suspended account is deleted from the global view and the offender is prohibited from creating new accounts. They inform the user that their account has been suspended due to abuse violations and specify the rules or policies they broke as well as the specific content that was in violation, before permanently suspending the account
- Violators have the right to challenge their permanent suspensions if they believe Twitter officials erred. They can do this by sending a report or using the platform’s user interface.
If they find that a suspension is lawful following an appeal, they respond to the appeal with information on the policy that the account violated.
